In the Payments Radar 2026, Part 2, we highlight the developments currently shaping the European payments landscape, identify areas where concrete action is needed, and outline the issues that banks and payment service providers should already be addressing strategically.
Following a regulatory turning point in European payments, the focus in 2026 will be on the implementation and scaling of new requirements, infrastructures and services.
At the same time, new developments are gaining significant momentum: the digital European payment system Wero, API-based account-to-account (A2A) payments and data-driven services are transforming market structures in the payments sector and opening up new strategic options for banks. At the same time, with e-invoicing, eIDAS 2.0 and the EU AI Act, the demands on integration, governance and real-time capability are rising continuously.
