The art of modern banking: Why creativity is shaping the future of banking
The art of modern banking is a campaign through which we are exploring new, creative approaches to banking and adopting fresh perspectives on the future of banking. Unusual – but only at first glance. On closer inspection, it becomes clear that in an increasingly complex financial world, traditional ways of thinking are no longer enough; instead, creativity, courage and a shift in mindset are crucial. Embrace this new perspective and discover the art of modern banking.

Art of modern banking
Those who bank on a “business as usual” approach today are banking on stagnation.
That is not a provocation – it is an observation. Declining margins, rising costs, growing regulatory requirements: decision-makers in Frankfurt am Main are just as familiar with these as their counterparts in Amsterdam or Stockholm. And yet most institutions respond with the same pattern: incremental optimisation, cautious steps, as little risk as possible.
For a long time, that was considered rational. Today, it is the real threat.
The core problem is not a lack of digitalisation – it is the clinging to ways of thinking that were developed for a linear world. Whilst established banks optimise, FinTechs, platforms and new competitors are redrawing the picture. The picture of what banking can be – and will be in the future.
Anyone who genuinely wishes to transform in this situation needs more than new technologies. They need a new mindset. One that is not immediately obvious in banking: that of an artist.
Art? Really?
Yes – and quite deliberately so. Because art does not always mean beauty. Nor is it always accessible at first glance.
Some works are unsettling. Some are not understood until decades later. Picasso, for instance: he did not simplify – he deconstructed and reassembled. Great works always rest on a decision: to let go of the familiar before the new is yet visible.
It is precisely this ability to create amidst uncertainty that is the artistic principle banking needs most urgently today. Not as a metaphor. As a structural principle.
Anyone who genuinely wishes to transform must be willing to create something that not everyone will appreciate at first – but that is nonetheless the right thing. That is the idea behind The Art of Modern Banking – Creative Minds. Powerful Banking. Not as a conventional campaign, but as a mindset.
Welcome to our exhibition
As part of “the art of modern banking”, we approach central themes in banking not as functional disciplines, but as exhibitions – spaces in which new perspectives become visible.
Enter each exhibition with a question in mind: Not “How do we optimise this?” – but “What would be possible if we redesigned the picture?”
Each subject follows its own rules, brings its own challenges – and at the same time stands for certain principles. To provide orientation, we have assigned a distinctive colour to each subject area.

Exhibition I: Payments
Payments demands precision, security and reliability. In a world of real-time transactions and global connectivity, seamless functionality and secure processes are essential. Your clients expect exactly that. Can you deliver?
Blue is, for us, the colour of modern payments. It stands for professionalism, credibility and security – precisely the qualities that also distinguish our payments experts.

Exhibition II: Customer Experience
Customer Experience revolves around emotion, interaction and perception. Banking is no longer merely functional – it is, above all, an experience. The question is no longer whether your institution is digital. It is whether it is fit for the future and able to keep pace with other online platforms.
Shades of red embody, for us, a modern customer experience. Just as this spectrum of colour stands for activity, energy and passion, so our experts are committed to a seamless and compelling customer journey.

Exhibition III: Compliance
Compliance stands for order, stability and reliability. It defines the guardrails within which financial institutions are permitted to operate in order to meet legal, regulatory and ethical requirements. And it is far more than a cost factor: it is a mark of quality.
Green is therefore a perfect fit for our understanding of compliance. Compliance in banking means, to us, the consistent adherence to legal requirements, supervisory regulations and internal policies in order to safeguard stability, order and reliability. Our experts support you in ensuring that your compliance always remains firmly in the green.

Exhibition IV: Artificial Intelligence
Artificial Intelligence opens up a new dimension. It connects logic with creativity, efficiency with the capacity for innovation – yet it only realises its potential when deployed responsibly. The decisive question is not whether your institution uses AI, but whether you know how to use it to create something new, rather than merely accelerating the old.
Violet is, for us, the colour of artificial intelligence. It combines the security and professionalism of blue with the energy of red to create something magically new. Our experts understand the magic of artificial intelligence and know how you can deploy AI within your institution in a way that unlocks its full innovative power – always professionally, in compliance with the rules and regulatory requirements.
Why we chose art as our guiding principle – and what that really means
Art is far more than mere decoration. It is at the heart of our decision.
The visual world of our campaign is based on genuine works of art, created by real artists – translated into digital form. These are not arbitrary design elements, but interpretations of artistic principles such as abstraction, reduction, contrast and perspective.
Just as art reduces complexity to what is essential, our artworks reflect the ambition to make banking systems clearer, more intuitive and more human. And just as genuine art demands the willingness to endure the unfinished until it is finished, genuine transformation in banking demands precisely the same.
The colour palettes – from blue through red and green to violet – stand both for individual subjects and for different ways of thinking, mindsets and approaches. They are not categories. They are invitations.
A perspective born of experience
At msg for banking, this perspective does not emerge in a vacuum.
For decades, we have accompanied financial institutions through different technological and regulatory eras – from the early days of digitalisation through new platform models to today’s AI-driven developments. We have witnessed how well-intentioned transformation programmes fail – not because of the technology, but because of the mindset behind it.
Time and again, one thing has become clear: every new era in banking demands more than new technologies. It demands new ways of thinking. Today, that is truer than ever – because pace, complexity and interconnectedness have reached a new dimension, and because the next disruption will not announce itself in advance.
Creative minds. Powerful banking.
The future of banking will not be determined by systems, data or regulation alone.
It will be shaped by those who are able to:
- create amidst uncertainty, rather than waiting for certainty,
- simplify complexity – without concealing it,
- achieve clarity in design that inspires trust, and
- bring together different perspectives.
By those who unite the principles of art with the discipline of banking. That is the idea behind “The Art of Modern Banking – Creative Minds. Powerful Banking.”
Not as a conventional campaign – but as an invitation to rethink banking. And to reshape it.
